Default Brand New to Supply

I have my very first day on supply coming up shortly, and I am very nervous. Does anyone have any advice about how to manage behaviour for just one day? I don't know the behaviour policy and will have to do my own thing where behaviour is concerned. Haven't been in a school in a while, and am worried about getting through the lessons too. It's a middle stage composite class.

Hello and welcome!

Well done on getting some supply work! You will be fine! As for behaviour management I would try and have a quick look/ask about the schools policy before the

Good luck and enjoy it, let us know how you get on.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with Footie, make your expectations clear from the beginning of the day. Be firm, and carry through with any threats you make include as

All of the above!

Look for class / school rules displayed in the classroom and make a point of reading through them stating you'll be expecting the rules to be followed. Explain what will happen if they're not and do it!

If they are no rules / behaviour policy set your own, state your expectations. Do ask for support if you need it, its a strength and it gives a very clear message to the rest of the class.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. Glad I read it last night! Turned out I got flung in at the deep end quicker than I thought. Got a phone call to go in to cover an infants class today. Got through the teacher's programme (after a fashion!) but found I kept stopping the class to berate them for being too noisy. Using the teacher's group points system for positive beahviour management only worked to a limited extent, and even found myself sometimes trying to give instructions before I had everyone's attention... basic stuff I should know not to do.

Does anyone have any good

s on how to get children to focus on work? Every time I had a reading group, the rest of the class got very noisy, and I was torn in two between trying to make sense of what I was to do with the group, and control the rest of the class. I'd forgotten how hard it is to retain control when I don't know names.

Little ones respond well to 'noise police'. Appoint one for each table to be in charge of the noise on that table - the best noise police table get's a reward. They love it! Just don't let them shhhh too much. It can get very annoying!
