Beginning of Term
Hiya everyone, hope your summers are all going well, i've been reading and everyone seems to be having fun (mostly) and enjoying holidays (you lucky things, I'm not going away this year). Anyway, I have managed to get myself a terms supply To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. ting in september, after having applied for what seemed like a million jobs, much like everyone else. Thing is, I've only been doing supply since January and i've never been in the position of having a class from the beginning of the school year so i've got a few questions that i hope you more experienced teachers can help me with. Firstly the classroom, i've been in and had a look round and it is very bare, should i be putting up displays before the children come back or should i just be getting the boards ready for displays ie with bac To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Secondly the planning, i'm sure the school will help me with this i'm still an NQT but i'm sort of stuck with it. I know everything that has to be taught just how do you decide what order to do it in. For Numeracy and Literacy i just don't know how to put it together. HELP!! I know it must sound daft but i've always had medium term planning to work from in the past so am really struggling now i have to sort it myself. Other subjects the school has said they use the schemes of work so that is fine. Please give me all of your advice!!!

First of all, congratulations!
Next, don't panic.
Displays, back all the boards, and know what's going to go on each, and get half the stuff up... let the kids think they're choosing what's going where etc. Leave a nice space for classroom code of conduct, team points chart, 5 things to do while you're waiting to ask Miss a question, stuff like that. Talk these things over with the kids in the first week, so they actually know what's on the walls.
Literacy & Numeracy... the school should have medium term plans for these too somewhere... you need to know how/when/if, say in Y4, the extended story writing fits in with the history/georgraphy that year. There really should be the previous 2 or 3 years plans for all subjects lying around somewhere... .keep digging!
If not... what year group is it? (On hols, could be a while before I reply again!)

I know that the previous teacher resigned mid year and it appears that they have taken all of their stuff with them, might try emailing the head and see if he has any existing planning at all.

Will ask at school tomoro but can anyone tell me any good ways of getting To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. ted on deciding on which texts to use, finding this really difficult as i don't know what the school has, should i wait and find out or try and decide on some non text based activities for this week with only 3 teaching sessions. Also has anyone got any good To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. s for activities for the first day back, getting to know you. First time i've done this and it seems its a bit of an easy day in the school. The head has told me that the kids need to have a really good day but i don't think we can play games all day. I thought about doing a comic strip about their holidays or a picture board type thing. What do you guys think????

Make the day about them, and about you, and about the class. Yes, do none text-based activities, unless you can find a book with someone's first day at school...

It's Roald Dahl's 90th birthday on 13th Sept, so you could do some focus work on his books so that you have a display to get up to celebrate his birthday next week. Kids love his books and most schools have the texts, good luck!

Hi, sorry didn't find your topic till now, I hope it's all going well and that you are feeling more sorted. If you haven't got your literacy planning sorted then two places to look for To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I work on the lines of fit texts in with topic / science work you are doing so the children really get imersed in their work. I remember doing playscripts based on To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Hi everyone, seems like you are all enjoying not getting any calls today!!! I sort of wish I was with you but it is really nice to know i've got a full term's work. Would quite like to pick and choose lie-in's again though. Anyway, first day today went really well, kids are really nice and all but one behaved themselves perfectly. Think we are going to get on!! Now just to get through the next few weeks, when is half term again????
