Just seeking some advice at raising levels in writing in my Year 3 class.
I have some fairly low ability children in my class, especially in writing! I want to give them regular writing homework which they can do with their parents or independently!

Does anybody know of any similar type of writing activities or any suggestions as to where i would find some? (nice fun activities, that not only my lower ability will enjoy but the whole class)
Many thanks in advance

Pie Corbetts Jumpstart books spring to mind but (and I know this is really helpful) I've left mine at school! I'll have a browse tomorrow and get back to you to say if they are suitable.

One of the best homeworks for this would be a 'talking' homework... i.e. This week we'll be writing a story about a

captain with your parents. What does he look like? How does he talk? Is he a bossy captain or kind? Does he have a good friend? Where is the treasure? What kind of treasure is it?

Children's writing is significantly improved if they know what they're writing about. Talking to their parents about it brings it alive in their mind's eye before they set pen(cil) to paper, fires their imaginations... Get them to do the planning before they do the planning! Kids generally use planning time really ineffectively...
