As for the afternoon, if there is no work set, how about giving the children maths challenges based on the rainforest (hopefully, this wouldn't 'step on the class teacher's toes' and cover something she has planned for later in the term...)
Maybe give them a sheet with the height of different rainforest animals or trees and get them to work out different ways of putting the animals together to make a tower the same height as a specific tree, writing their own maths problems and solving them (e.g. what 2 animals are the same height as 3 To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater.
