I'm so glad I'm not the only one struggling with these new-fangled ways of teaching maths. I plan to get my Y5 and Y7 nephews to explain it all -don't get me started on wierd stuff in literacy!!

When all else fails I give up and do something on multiplication or invite a child to 'be teacher' to refresh our minds on the subject.

at the getting a child to be the teacher, I have used that one often!

Actually once I got the hang of the chunking i quite liked it, it leads more or less straight into long division and reinforced that division is just repeated subtraction.

I think if a kid can understand it, along with fractions, they've cracked maths, and it's not that hard to understand!

If I can understand it, do and teach it, it must be good! I could never do long division when I was at school, but love this method!
