Default The New Primary Framework

It's online now:

I've been having a good look through, I don't see that many teachers will have to change their planning much.

Literacy: The word and sentence level work is much less prescriptive, but for ease/progression, I'd stick with the old literacy strategy for that. Text level work, OMG, so much poetry! Arghh! Pretty much same sort of stuff we've been doing, e.g. imaginery worlds still in Y4.

Numeracy: Still trying to get to grips with the layout etc., as with Literacy, there are learning objectives, strands, units, blocks, all sorts of ways of looking at it. Pretty much just the numeracy hour but jumbled up a bit. Interesting that median, range and mean aren't mentioned 'til Year 6, and I was dumped with that in a Year 5 very low ability class the other day, I swore blind they weren't ready to the TA, who argued back that it was just a bad lesson because I was a supply teacher, but they didn't even know how to read the data tables/graphs, let alone do something with them! It was a one-off, the teacher didn't want anyone else following her plans, to make sure it was delivered properly, if I knew what she meant! Arghhh!!!

Ok, rant over.

There are quite a few topics that have changed year in the maths framework. I think I quite like it - much less prescriptive. On the other hand, prescriptive can be good, for teachers who are new or who are not confident with maths. I notice there are no links to the unit plans, so I assume that has all gone out the window.

I'd like to use the framework for a while to assess how it works, however where I am we don't use the old NNS, so we won't use this either.

It's strange that schools don't use them, I knew you didn't have to, but thought that it was the done thing! The school where I had my interview last week didn't start doing the Literacy/Numeracy Hour 'til last year... probably under pressure as their results were so low... (That's not me being bitter btw!)

We don't use it because it is too bitty. WE have our own doctored version, that has a longer block of the same thing.

Very similar to the new strategy, actually, which is all in two week blocks!

That's like how I used to teach before it all started... not enjoying the numeracy hour, the kids don't know where they are!

Thanks for the summary Nutty. I haven't looked at it yet and need to do so at some point.

I was under the impression that schools could phase it in, ie Literacy this year, Numeracy next or is that just how the schools I have spoken to have chosen to introduce it? I'm not really sure about the introduction of it and feel like I should know.

I also recall reading that numeracy unit plans were being phased out, but I could be wrong. I think if you go to the standards website it states that they will no longer be available. You can still download them at the moment though.

While we are discussing curriculum issues... how have people found SEAL this year?

I first heard of SEAL on Friday, when a TA came in looking for the SEAL folder. Thought she meant the one with a piccy of a dolphin on!

What is it?

it seems quite good, we're going to start using bits of it, but as we have to do 2 1/2 hours of RE a week (yeah right!) our PShe has to be covered within that or we don't have time for anything else. I'm PSHE co-ordinator now, so am learning about all this!

As Gnomoospan said. Just wondered because my old school were really hoping it would help improve behaviour, but I haven't seen much evidence of it in the schools I have done supply in except during anti-bullying week. One of my regular schools introduced it and gave a lot of emphasis but some of the teachers have been heard saying that it hasn't really worked.

I just wondered if it was an

that in theory sounds superb but in practce...

Be interesting to hear how you get on Gnomoospan, especially as you co-ordinate PSHE!
