Default Is the agency telling me fibs ???

Hi,

I'm a recently graduated teacher her in NZ (but not registered). Unfortunately, I can't find any teaching work here and I'd like to return home (I'm British ad was educated over there). Last week I spoke to an agency in the UK who assured me there was plenty of supply work in Coventry (why?) and NZ teachers are well respected and I should have no problem filling my days. But... reading the informed comments about supply work both here and on other forums I'm a little weary as he told me to arrive in April and we could get moving? I'm just wandering what the true picture is like in the uk, is it poss for foreign non-registered teachers to be accepted, or are they frowned upon form above ?

You could end up working for peanuts? From what I believe, non-registered teachers will be paid a non-qualified rate, half the price of a normal teacher, and I don't know of any school that would give work to a 'non-qualified' teacher, as they would rather use in-house teaching assistants to cover. I have no

why he said to arrive in April, it could take around / more than 3 months for a CRB check (police check) to come through, and then it'd arrive just in time for the 6/7wk summer holidays!

Nutty,

thanks for your reply ...

working for 1/2 pay doesn't sound too appealing - I don't know how much that is but I bet it isn't too hot. I'm still

how much supply work there is out there because I really want registration eventually.

Do all new teachers just have to keep looking for supply work - or am I missing something ?

If you don't get a job as an NQT, then there's pretty much only supply left to do... There's a four-term rule here too that I'm not sure of the latest on, but it was that you could only do 4 terms of supply as an NQT before you lost your status, so the pressure was on to find a job within those 4 terms, or not start supply work, and find money elsewhere while trying to find a post in which to complete your NQT year..

Nutty,

ta for the info ... just confirm you only get 4 terms to supply ?? What happens then ? That surely can't work with the amount of labour on the market - what percentage of NQT are getting positions within 4 months ? Over here on my course of 70 the new year starts next week and 10 have jobs. I don't think many will get 4 terms continuous supply but at least you can keep going forever.

I'm beginning to believe the agency painted a slightly rosy picture and just wanted another body. Something elese I can't work out is why he told me Coventry was desperate for those of my ilk ??

Ah well, at least I have a job for the time being - better than a

Over here, now remember that I left teaching to have my son in late 2009 and I may be out of date with things, NQTs have to complete a 'probationary', or induction year. If they get a job straight away, then their new school will help them through this. If they don't get a job and want to earn money, they have two choices: supply work, or non-supply work (factory, shop, office etc.) If they opt for non-supply work, many believe that this may hinder their chances when applying for teaching jobs as they are not in the same field gaining experience that others may be getting. If they opted for supply work, from the day they started working as a supply teacher, they can work 4 terms as one, then they have to stop. They in effect, lose their qualification. There was a petition to get this changed, but I don't know the outcome. There were circumstances where you could apply for extensions, but you really needed to have started your induction year in that time.

I don't know anything about Coventry in particular, but I've never known anywhere be desperate before? Maybe there's something special about your ilk?! I've heard that only a third of NQTs get a position to start straight away, but also know that they are training less teachers at the moment as population is decreasing in the age group for the next few years and the teacher market seems a bit flooded... I've read that a third of teachers looking for employment in the sector are unsuccessful and I know many change careers quite early on.

I'm painting a muddy picture, I think your agency contact may have painted a rosy picture, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle!
