Default visit to schools

In almost all vacancy ads they encurage visits to the schools, is this part of the recruitment process or do I have the same chance on getting the job if I dont visit the school?

You do look more interested in the post if you go and visit. Some heads will make a note of those that do and use this info when shortlisting. I imagine though it depends on the school how much it counts for them I've known some schools advertise before a holiday and have the closing date on the Tuesday after, now why don't they want anyone round?

Probably officially not part of it, unofficially a huge part of it I'm sure!

You should really look round if you can... schools vary massively, and you can often get a feel for it after the first few minutes wal

I agree!
I was short listed for a job and only had a look around just before my interview - and I knew I wouldn't be happy there (bad atmosphere!) It was hard when they asked, as part of the interview, whether I would be happy to take on the role if it was offered - I'm sure my lack of enthusiasm stopped them from offering it to me (thankfully!)

I think Heads appreciate a visit and it is good to have a nose around a different school. I have even used the opportunity to introduce myself for supply work!!

Agree with everything so far. Although I have previously been to a few schools where unknown to me, the jobs had already gone internally!!! A complete waste of time I felt. However HT's do know how many take the time to bother to look around, heard one HT recently comment on the few applicants that had taken the time to look around.

Go if you can is all I'd say to you.

Good luck

I have visited before when children have shown me round and the head hasn't been in the building, useful for me but not for them!

That must have been for an open day or something similar?

Make sure you meet with the HT or if unavailable arrange with the DH, I did that once and was given an interview only to be told that it was an excellent interview but because I had not worked there as supply they really would like to get to know me better-could I phone them in sept if I didn't get a job with a view to supply

Obviously there will be times when it is impossible to visit the school.

Another time I spent 40 mins with the HT visiting the school (I thought gosh he must really like me maybe I'm in with a chance here), that was the school where the job had already been earmarked for someone internally

Obviously a very sociable HT or had a lull in his usually busy schedule...

Fingers crossed it will happen Jane believe it, you just have to be in their faces (in a nice way of course), be the one supply that is on the tip of their tongue when they are searching for cover.

I had a school visit like Audrey. Was shown to the Heads Office where we talked for 30 minutes, he asked me lots of questions and showed me round the school. Then back to his office where he advised me exactly what to put in my letter. Thought he must have really liked me- didn't get shortlisted! I thought he should have better things to do with his time!
