Default Any advice for an old timer!!

I have been out of teaching for a long while, 8 years or so, want to return and have been doing some supply. Am applying for a job at school i have been doing supply at, the problem is my references. I have no one to ask for a reference of my teaching ability, this school has been my main supply. I have used the school for a reference for a supply agency, but I can't really use them for a job at the school, can I? Any advice regarding letters of appli

Hi Old Timer and welcome to the forum. Well done on returning to teaching after your break, you are not alone with your decision, I was chatting to a colleague the other day who has just returned after 7 years. It is a tough one re references-I'm not entirely sure what to advise, could your agency count as a reference? Perhaps if you have a chat with the DH/HT at the school that you are applying to they may be able to advise you. Others on here may have more info.

As for letters of appli

Remember how skilled and experienced you are and good luck with it.

I'm having the same problem, when I applied for a job at my supply school the head suggested I asked the deputy for a reference. Would this work for you? I have just telephoned the local authority to ask about references, she said she would ring back today and let me know if supply school's are obliged to give a reference or what my altermatives would be.

I have to say this reference thing is a bit of a nightmare eh. When I have been applying for jobs recently I have noted how outdated my references are (to be honest), have kept my head down about it all so far

I had to ring the council back and the woman I spoke to had gone home. However, the next person I spoke to said that I should ask my second school again, they could accept a reference from any one who knew me there including the school secretary. All they would be as

I would definetly phone the school monday with the information that they have given you and don't be fobbed off. You are obviously all of those things and more because you have been asked back to schools when on supply. Bloody job hunting all we want is our NQT to be out of the way, after that we can turn back into human beings again instead of something unrecognisable
