Job offer?!?!? or not
On Friday a school I regularly supply at asked whether or not I would be interested in taking a job in year 3! The job would start in September and it would be definitely be for 1 term. The teacher is going on sabbatical and may need to be absent for more than a term! I get to start my first term of nqt and that would be great.
However... the teacher said that by law she has to offer the job internally, but she does not think anyone will apply. Today she asked me again if I am defo interested and I said yes that I would really like it,,, but what happens now? Do I still have to have an interview?
Also they do not want me through my supply agency as they said it would cost too much money! I am a little To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. about what I need to do now!?!? And I do not want to sound stupid by asking!
Thanks for any advice

Well, it sounds like the school want to employ you without telling your agency. I've never personally been in that position, but I'm sure there are others on here who have. I suppose you just have to make sure the agency don't find out somehow - but don't let that put you off if you want the job! It sounds like an excellent opportunity.
I think there'll probably need to be a period where it's advertised, perhaps on the council vacancies bulletin or something. When I got my first job, covering a maternity leave, looking back I was soooo lucky. I basically just went for a quick chat with the head and the deputy and they looked over my CV, and got references, that was pretty much it. Oh and I spent the day there being checked out by the Y1 teacher I covered for. Someone had been lined up for it, and she dropped out, so I stepped in. But that was before I started doing agency work, and the head apparently found me through the head of the school I was doing my final placement at. And it worked out that I got my whole NQT year done, as someone else went off on maternity leave straight after the first teacher came back, and they kept me on - To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Hi Luclu, you don't need to do anything now, just sit back and wait! Cogs take a long time to turn in schools, and even though it'll be invading your thoughts all the time, it could be a few weeks before it's thought about at school again. It's up to them to make the next move I'd say, tell you exactly what's going on and if there's anything you need to do... hold on tight!

Thanks!
It will be totally amazing if I get my first job without an interview, but I do not think I will be that lucky!
I was just starting to panic as I only just realised that you had 3 terms to complete nqt year and I have 2 hols booked (in term time) which means that I cannot get a job til september! Everything should work out great FINGERS CROSSED?!
Thanks again! x

You have 5 years to gain your NQT but you have to be working for at least one term in the same school, continuously before you can get going. There is, however, a limited number of terms that you can work as supply without gaining your NQT. You can apply for an extension on this time but this is at the discretion of the LEA. Not all LEAs are rigid about this though! I was approached by one of my regular schools last October to cover a sickness absence that began the middle of January. I have been given an open ended contract to safe-guard both myself and the school for this period. Nearer to the end of the summer time I would certainly try and spend some time in your new classroom finding out where everything is, the teacher's usual routines etc. You can always change them to suit yourself later but it will give you a good grounding. Good Luck and enjoy!

Wow it's sounds To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. l, To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. for you. I did a short term contract before christmas as a teacher had left and that wasn't advertised, it was supposed to go on longer to enable me to start my induction and do 2 terms but it never worked out because they had someone else about to go off for maternity leave. They decided that they could not have 2 nqt's in the school at the same time (too much like hard work) To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. I was dissapointed as I'd put my heart and sole into the job and was desparate to get my induction started. Since then my contacts at the original schools have dried up whereas supply is concerned.
My only advice for you would be that if you do get offered the contract, ensure they start your induction as things can change very quickly. Where I am a lot of schools can't be bothered with the process of nqt's because they have to support them etc. etc.
Good luck it does sound like a good opportunity.

Yes! I know what you mean! All the schools I like always put on their job advertisments 'would prefer a more experienced teacher'. I can understand that there are benefits, but there are also benefits to a nqt! To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Totally agree and yes experienced teacher's don't need as much input (if at all) but we need to start somewhere, as they once did. We just need a chance and this could be yours, so go for it if it's a definite I'd say. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I think it depends very much on the school - after all, you've got a lot of valuable expertise that some more experienced teachers may not have who have been in the same place for a long time. You have learned how to think on your feet and manage a lesson with the resources you have available and deal with all sorts of behaviour and special needs the average 'fresh out of college' teacher will not. Don't undersell yourself, after all, it's not as if you're getting much in the way of supervision now is it?!
When I got my NQT post, I was given it after a much more experienced teacher than me dropped out - so you never know for the future either - good luck!

The teacher I am covering for retires in the Summer, but I'm not holding my breath. The Head is looking for the most suitable candidate and not some-one who is cheap and cheerful! I do wish everyone would stop saying 'You might do it differently in September' though.
