Default Job Seekers Allowance

I know a lot of you are suffering from no work at the mo (or very little) and now I work at DWP doing benefit claims I thought I'd let you all know that you are entitled to claim JSA if you are wor

16 or plus hours per week and even then if you go back under one week you can do a rapid reclaim. Also my trainer told me that some supply teachers totally score from this as the JSA pays their NI contributions plus they are also getting it paid from the agency etc. as they are earning £200 plus per week from supply. Worth knowing for anyone who is struggling for supply at the moment. Also for anyone with children who is not claiming Child tax credits, put a claim in. And Footie you should be entitled to a grant once you hit 25 weeks as well. Think its Health in Pregnancy Grant.

As a single person and a supply teacher I clain Jobseekers Allowance in the holidays & half terms, often making use of rapid reclaim.

Danfur, how can you claim while also working up to 16 hours a week? Surely two days' work a fortnight will cancel out any benefits from signing on?

I'm interested in claiming working tax credits, but don't think these apply unless you have children or other dependents living with you (which I don't). Am I right on that?

under 16 hours a week. However whatever you earn is taken off your benefit £ for £. So if you earn £60 and usually get £60 in benefits then you'd just get your wages, but if you usually get £60 and only earn £30 they'll pay you the rest up to your usual amount. However you don't have to sign off until you hit 16 hours. It just kind of makes it easier straight after hols where you might not get much work, you can continue signing on until you hit the limit. If you claim in the hols ask your personal advisor in the jobcentre about it.

Tax credits for a single person without children you have to be wor

Thanks Nutty, I might as well be of some use to someone here. I actually only wanted people to know because I spent plenty of time struggling to get by and if I'd known this it would have been easier, especially months like December with only 4 supply days etc.

Default supply JSA

I am new to supply and am claiming JSA.

I heard I can claim housing benefit- what happens when I get more than 16 hours of work how does it affect the housing benefit. I thought i was intelligent until I tried to figure this all out - it should be

You can claim JSA for any of the time when you are out of work. If you go on either the jobcentreplus website or ring up they'll let you know you're eligibility.

If you do a rapid reclaim you just phone up as you would to make a new claim. In terms of finding the time, if you arrange the appointment and can't make it the jobcentre should technically re arrange it for you if you call them, but if you have any problems with that call the contact centre and they will probably rearrange it if the jobcentre hasn't.

Do the appointment on a day where you have nothing booked. I found on supply it was really useful to have a cut off time for short term supply work as in I would wait until 8.30 and then if I didn't have a call I would go off and do something else - it was awful being called after 8.30 and being expected to get sorted and to a school.
