Sorry and about the housing benefit the council would have to let you know about that. I think they go off income rather than hours worked.

Hi,
I just read your post and have been on JSA before. I'd love to do this, but not sure if it'd be more hassle than its worth...You have to go in every other week, so what happens if you get a call for a job (say its your only call that week, so you want to take it) when it is your day to go in. I know you can only miss one of the days and then there is a whole hassle of having to state why you didn't go and rearranging it. Then you can only miss one of the days and also you have to still be applying for work, so although you are getting a bit of extra cash it seems like a lot of extra work...
I know you're trying to help, sorry for putting a downer on it!

Don't worry I am not offended. At the end of the day it is 'free' money so an element of hassle can be expected/tolerated in my opinion. Obviously I am on the other side of it now but tbh I never enjoyed signing but I did it because I had bills to pay and food to buy.

If you can afford not to claim benefits when out of work then you are very lucky but I just wanted people to be aware that there is an option that I never realised as I was struggling.

I totally understand and I think that was really good. I am lucky because I live at home and my Mum has been very understanding. Maybe it was just my job centre, it has kind of put me off because they were so unhelpful.

Hi I'm a newbie and thank you for such a helpful thread

.

After qualifying I had a term with no work where I claimed JSA, then the following two terms I had a temporary full-time teaching job and was able to claim WTC. Come this September I was back to cover work but for all of September there was another teacher off sick so I had full-time work, now she's back its back to waiting every morning to see if there's a phone call

.

I am currently getting WTC as I have managed 2-3 days work each week but next week is half-term, do I sign on (I don't think I can get anything for the first 3 days can I?) and tell WTC. What if I find the week after half-term I get more supply work and am eligible for WTC again and not JSA? This seems so messy and confusing

. Also when counting hours do you count the school day hours i.e. 6.5 or 8 hours to include prep work?

I'd like to be have all the information as last time I signed on nobody seemed to know what they were doing and I was given a lot of wrong information. Thanks

Check with tax credits but I believe if the stop in work is to be less than 28 days then you would continue to receive working tax credit. When you sign on to JSA they inform tax credits you have signed on and they continue to pay wtc for 28 days so i think thats why they don't stop them if you are only on a short stop - hope that all makes sense!!!

And about the hours I am not sure what they count as working hours. I would give tax credits a call just to check!

Question Claiming JSA

Hi just seen this thread. When i completed my teacher training in June this year I tried to claim JSA as i had no work and did not know when i would get some. However i was told because i had not worked in the last 2 years i could not claim. Am i being fobbed off or is this correct? Ive spoken to loads of people and they think i should get it.
Any advise please!

I've been teaching for 30 years and from this September seems to be the worst start to a year that I've known since the early '80's when I was just starting out and getting myself known. Have just registered again as since September I have only had 10 days work even though I am registered with 3 agencies and have worked in the past 18 months in 5 LEA's here in the Midlands. There is also a lack of permanent jobs out there. TES has 22 Secondary classroom teacher jobs in East and West Midlands. What have the tories done???

Hi, it is probably because you haven't paid enough National Insurance with you being in training and not working. If you don't have a partner working full time or significant savings you might be able to apply for income based JSA but if not they are probably right. You can always appeal the decisions if you don't agree or if you just want more explanation.
