Default What would you do?

I have been doing supply at two schools which has

e nearly full work for me.

One school has had a major problem and the headteacher will not be going back and the deputy head is now acting which means extra work on the supply front. Last week the other school asked me if I could cover a p/t post which in effect is 2 half days and 2 full days and I was asked at lunchtime before setting out for the other school and they were quite honest and said that the wanted to get me before I went there.

I was fairly happy with what they said altho it was supply and not a fixed term contract and that I would like the bits of days to be put together as one. This was feasible. I have tried to phone this boss several times as I would like to know where I am for next term and he has not got back to me. Other teachers have also broached him about the subject cos they are involved too.

I treis to make an appointment to see him but he was too busy and that is true.

However as I was leaving the other school tonight I was offered 2 terms fixed contract with Y6. (My favourite year)

I can retire in August 2010, if I want.

So OH says go for the contract job but I feel as if I would be letting the other school down. OH says think of yourself.

HELP and support needed please

I'd go for a contract over supply, but only because I've been shafted when doing long-term cover on daily supply (like being mucked about with days, being told I wouldn't have to do reports and then being asked to produce reports at a

of days notice, being pointedly told I was "only supply", so I wouldn't get PPA as it was cheaper for the DHT to do the planning and that I wasn't welcome at staff meetings!

I think if you're retiring in 2010 officially don't you need to think of what your pension will end up as, in which case I'd go for the 2 fixed terms, tricky one though, where will you be happiest?

Derrrrrrrrrrrr, tricky one that. At one school the kids are very difficult and come from some awful backgrounds and they are such hard work but I love kids like that and the staff all have wicked senses of humour and we use the F word a lot and a few others. Also that was the school that I taught full time when I first moved into this area 10 years ago so they are the people I have known longest plus I can have a bacon sandwich fom breakfat club on Thursday morning.

The other school, contract one I haven't known the people as long but they trust me and are down to earth. There are a few difficult kids but I have known teaching again with lots of then, you know when there faces light up and when they have learnt something. I feel totally accepted there. Only one man teacher tho plus caretaker.

Yes I do have to think about my pension and it is only for 2 terms. Cruising after SATS, revision for SATS.
Next year, the class I had for about 5 weeks before Xmas and the run up to thie next one.

I'd have to kick in again getting known to get more supply but only 1 year and 2 terms to go then'

I have probably

e my decision - contract. Facing the other boss is something else but logically, if he were offered a contract coming up to retirement age for 2 terms or 2 days and 2 half days supply what would he do?

I can go into any school and face any class as a supply teacher but would need support to go back to planning etc. It has been offered.

Y6 is a difficult group, with hormones raging, the thought of transition and SATS so I must admit to being a tad flattered that they have asked me. Am I up to it?

Praps I should set up one of those time thingies which count down the years and months until I can retire!!!

Thanks for replying, guys

Joan, hormones are raging in our Y5 at the moment, and pretty much settled down in Year 6!

I'd go for the contract too. Only because of the pension situation. I would much prefer to do the 2 days and 2 half days, sounds perfect to me (how far away is this job?

) but not at the cost of a reduced pension. For the remaining time, I'm sure the contract school will at least have you doing all their supply possible if not mini-contracts for boosters etc. They wouldn't let you just go!

Planning? How many classes per year group? Shouldn't be a problem really. Cram until the SATs, then relax!

I'm lucky (and the kids are!) to get a slice of toast at our breakfat club!

Go for it Joan! I loved Year 6 when I was teaching (I'm a penniless writer now!).

Let us know how it goes.

Also think contract Joan - pension, holiday pay and as mentioned, less chance of getting shafted!
