me up until Christmas. Up until now i have worked solely through agencies, keeping supply hours, 8.30 til 4 and getting roughly about £100 per day for NQT wage. For this post the school want to pay me through the local authority which I have found out pay about £15 per hour for a 6/6.5 hour day. Now i don't know if i am just whingeing or if this is just 'the real world' but at the moment i am in school every morning for 7.45 and don't leave until at least 5, am spending every night and much of the weekend planning. There is NO existing planning at all for this term so am having to do all medium and short term planning, plus all assessment and other general class duties. In addition to this the school are saying that i am not entitled to ppa as a supply and are so badly resourced that it is ta

me ages to find things for lessons, when i am not having to buy them myself. In addition to the obligatory staff meetings, briefings etc. Am i being unreasonable to think that something has got to give if i am to do all of this i should be getting ppa and/or a term's contract with the school, which would mean i will get holiday pay etc. i just feel as if i have completely lost my social life within a week and everytime i turn around there is more and more to do. OK rant over, just loo

Oh no.. I'm sorry you're going through this...

1st thing I would say is contact your union - hopefully it's a good one - and question them about PPA/contract/supply...

Secondly, the Government set the payscale for teachers. The LEA will be paying the correct amount, they're not allowed to shift from the CPS.

, can't find it for 2006 yet. Your LEA will be paying you the full pay/195, the number of teaching days. If you were paid more by the agency, you did well... some pay as low as £60 for NQTs!

It's very unfair that there're no plans from last year, medium term plans at least... I believed that schools had to keep copies of plans for five years for OFSTED inspections... ask again!

I have to say, when I quit teaching, I was in school for 8, and never left before 5:30, taking most of my marking home with me (stayed in school doing clubs, having meetings, and planning and prep), and I worked one day each weekend.

Do NOT buy anything yourself! Teachers, in 2001, spent over £3million on resources for their lessons... it's a joke... if there's something you need... shout... I've taught every lesson there is in the curriculum over the years, and there isn't a single one you can't do without resources I'm positive! If school aren't prepared to buy the stock for you, then you have to change your lesson plan. Your enthusiasm is more important to the kids than any artefacts/resources you could buy.

On what basis are you actually working here? Any sort of contract? What paperwork have you got from them? I'm mulling over the holiday pay bit...

If you feel like you've lost your social life... then yes, welcome to the real teaching world I'm afraid! Have one big blitz on your plans this weekend... get as much done as you can for this half term... and definitely you should have all medium term plans done by now.

The school sounds strange... have you read their latest OFSTED reports online? I've always had to hand in medium term plans to the Head at the end of the term before I was going to teach them, so they could look over them during the hols and make suggestions/changes as needed. Then, I've had to hand in a weekly plan (A4) along with weekly Lit/Num plans (A4 each) the week before for checking by HT and Lit/Num co-ordinators... All the plans I've ever handed in, I know for a fact, are still kept in the schools to this day... the two I worked in keep plans for 10 years.

Please do shout if there's anything I can do... and remember the first time you do everything, it takes twice as long as the next time you do it, so it will get easier!

Sending hugs (disabled in this post so the link would work!!!)

there was that i applied for a job with the school FT but didn't get offered an interview because apparantly the job had MPS. Anyway my mum knows the head as she works for the local council IT support and he mentioned he had a term coming up, she mentioned that I was free, but again he said he needed someone with MPS. As it turned out in the last week of last term, he called and said if i wanted it i could do it, that he wanted to keep me on supply wage and to get registered with the LEA. So i did that but they are pretty strange and don't give much info at the time. The school is having a lot of problems with staffing, having lost 2 FT out of 4 mid last year and 1 is still off with stress. He used to be a teaching head and i am covering for him. He is also having many probs OFSTED and advisors - wise and is getting a lot of imput and scrutiny over everything. The school looks like it may close in 2008. His reasoning for lack of planning is that they are re-doing the planning again and that is why there is none existing. I think that if I had job security/constant wage - long term/holiday and sick pay etc etc I wouldn't feel hard done to about the extra hours, but as it is I think it is just too much to expect all of this, whilst altogether being on supply wage. And if i'm on supply, what will be the situation re. staff meetings etc. I would be ready and willing to give up all free time i possibly have if i was permanent staff but at the mo am just thin

is it worth all of this, esp if they turn around at xmas and say there is no more supply as at the mo they are implying it will be longer term. I think i am just being a whinge cos it is a shock to my system after the hols but just feeling a little bummed at the mo.

A long way to London isn't it?! Thoughts are with you though...

Ok, it's half a day tomorrow isn't it? Get yourself registered with an agency! As soon as you can! You can register online with NUT for one (the only agency to support supply teachers properly), I'm not sure about the rest. Never walk into a classroom unless you're registered... they give you legal protection if nothing else.

I'd question the LEA direct about your contract... there should be a max. number of days you can work as supply without a contract I'm sure... if you already know you're there 'til Xmas, then tell the LEA > Plead ignorance with them, call on the pretence that you haven't signed your contract yet, know you're there 'til Xmas, and want to know if you can have a

y... something like that, then it might get the LEA into action over it on your behalf. Also tell your union about what's happening and get their advice.

As for putting in the hours on the supply wage, well, I'm afraid you're expected to do whatever the class teacher would do, in their absence. This includes attending staff meetings, as they're going to be relevant to your work. You're really getting the same wage (obviously depending on scale) as them pro rata if you're getting 6.48 hours pay a day. The difference is FT teachers elect to have their pay spread out through the year as a constant, ma

it easier to budget. They can do this as they know what their wage is going to be. They don't always opt to have the pay spread out, a friend of mine has his as and when he earns it, like a supply teacher, that way he's more motivated to get a part-time job for the holidays! Obviously though, you don't get sick pay. Supply pay for a day is total pay/195, teachers get total pay/365, something like that. But yes, if you had a contract, it should finish 31st December, rather than 21st, and you'd get more pay I'm sure...

Hey, look, it's nearly midnight and your birthday! It sounds like you're at a struggling school there, I'd take the opportunity to let your light shine out from amongst all the struggling staff and get yourself noticed by staff at other schools... you'll need your reference from the HT there before long hopefully too!

Good luck... and have fun, treat yourself tomorrow!!!
