On calling: I think it's polite to call first, otherwise it's just like direct mail/mailshot/junk mail. Anyway you can make it more personable to them is good. My covering letter etc. I mailmerge, so it has the right school typed throughout, along with the head's name at the top etc., less generic. I asked if they'd be interested in my CV if I posted it.
On hand-delivering: I hand-delivered the first lot (about 14 schools), and have worked at all but one, and I posted the second lot (over 20), and I've missed a call from one, but other than that, nothing! I've also worked in a To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I live in Cumbria, so it was pretty tough going delivering mine too, but I regret not hand-delivering at least some of the second lot.

I guess it was tough on the wallet though, and whenever I got stuck behind a tourist/Sunday driver on a winding lane!
I think hand-delivering gives you another opportunity to sell yourself. You don't have to actually do any hard sell or anything, it's just a matter of being polite, friendly, open and smart. A little chat with a secretary always gets back to the head. No word of a lie, the second letter I hand-delivered, I was chatting with the secretary, and getting on well, (some don't even look up obviously!) and she said, hold on, just give me a minute, she took the letter/CV to the head in the office behind, and the head walked out as she was ta To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. By the time the head or whoever gets your letter, you've already had two opportunities (phone and visit) to make an impression on the secretary, and you're virtually family!
It also gives you an opportunity to see the school and ascertain whether or not you would really be happy wor To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I thought if I ever worked there, I'd have to take the bus, and nothing in my school bag!
Hope this helps, but obviously, it's just my opinion, and experiences, and Cumbrian folk can be funny creatures when all said and done!
