I agree that you can identify your strengths straight away. I really want a long term position whereby I can start induction-am I being too optimistic??

I can totally relate to where you are coming from. I too am desperate to get my induction out of the way, I have been doing supply for nearly a year now and I feel that you start to wonder whether you will ever be able to function as a trained teacher eg. plan etc etc.

My advice would be to get out there with those documents and go into the schools because that way they will put a name to the face and appreciate you making an effort (that's what I was told anyway). Fingers crossed.

I know it's incredibly lazy, but what is eveyone's opinion of sending cv & covering letters into schools via email? Are they going to be overlooked?

Hi Delma as you know I hand delivered mine, sure someone on here said that it is beneficial if you can hand deliver so that they can put a face to the name (perhaps it was Nutty)? I telephoned first to ask them if they'd mind if I dropped them off.

But if anyone on here can recall this conversation or other useful advice it would be appreciated. It is probably a good time to get known aslo. Good luck.

Hi Delma,

Probably was me... I phoned and asked if they would be interested (hinting that I'd post it) then turned up with it in hand... got 4 days work offered when I walked into the first school as they needed someone there and then! Sooo much more polite if you do. The only school I didn't get work from in the first term after I delivered mine was the one I turned up to at lunchtime, and Y6s were on reception (I've worked for them for 5 years now, but it took a while before they called me!)

You never know how up to speed schools are with emails too... I know a head who prints them all out, then decides from that what she's going to read! Would never reply to one...

So, they may not be overlooked if you've got an IT literate Head working there, and some IT boff Heads may even be impressed, but I'd not count on any HT being IT literate myself! Oh, and if it's hand-delivered, it's much more likely to get into the hands of the right person... in a lot of schools it's deputy heads etc. that arrange supply.

Thank-you for this cover letter. Its a great help to see an example letter to get schools interested in you if they require supply work rather than a letter that is applying for a specific job!

This thread is really useful - I have been considering this especially as I live within 15 minutes walking distance of 3 primary schools (I don't drive) and therefore can get there if a last minute need-for-supply comes up.

I'm a 10-45 minutes public transport wise away from the major of other primary schools in my area. Not sure whether to contact my old primary school and ask about supply - Half the teachers/staff who were there when I was a student, still work there! Surreal experience.

THANKS
