Default September Blues!

I thought supply teachers were meant to wait to get work when teachers get sick and instead, I'm the one feeling poorly! Got a really sore throat (like I've swallowed a cactus whole) and feel really tired. Mind you, I haven't been offered any supply this term so I guess I'm lucky I'm poorly now! When do you think work will pick up? When do courses begin? When do teachers start getting sick? Gosh it's awful wishing people sick isn't it?! Anyone else in the same position still waiting for the call?

e me feel a whole lot better! I'm an NQT and so unknown to nearly all schools in my area- so it may well be October blues for me too! I had a little moan to my agency yesterday (Reeds Wakefield) and she rang me back with 3 afternoons over the next 2 weeks. I was briefly quite excited (and scared) but then realised its not that much for someone who is now in need of a decent wage! Does anyone know how much an afternoon in a school would be for an NQT?

Is it worth going round schools with a CV as people on here seem to rave about?

I think so, yes. Schools like to put a face to a name and you might just get lucky

It doesn't really cost anything so it must be worth a try (especially as it means you won't be giving part of your wages to the agency!)

Clarabelle, hope you feel better soon

I think I used to get between £50 and £60 for an afternoons work, quite good really. Keep your chins up girls, it will get better.

Thanks guys. Wow 50-60 sounds very good to me -as an NQT I presumed it would be around £40... Just did my first afternoon (which included 'golden time' so was a nice starter session!) and just filled my hours in online- though I put my hours as 1-3.30 (hence just 2 and half hours working time total) when that was just teaching time - I didn't actually leave until 4.30 with marking etc - but do you only get paid for official teaching time?

Sorry for all the questions! And its fair to say that after my first experience of supply with 34 kids -

Some schools have set hours for part days - e.g. one school gives me 3 hours for infants afternoon and 3.25 for juniors. May be worth asking the burser if you work direct.
Agencies should have a set amount for afternoons or mornings only - and this won't include all the marking time!

Yea, all very confusing at the mo! Well my agency apparently splits the day into five-so I can't think how it works when they want me to type in the specific hours I have worked! Will see when the first paycheck arrives I guess!

Hi, I'm new to this forum but have been doing supply for a year since I retired from full time teaching. Work has been very slow so far but did 1 day last week and booked for Monday next week. I've been told courses are going to be very few and far between this year- more peer training which can be covered by existing staff. We will have to wait and see!!

Well, no call again today! I worked 4 days last week which was great and have 3 days booked up this week and 4 next week so I should count myself lucky (mind you, out of those days, 2 days each week is at my permanent job so as far as supply goes, it's still very slow!). Am doing a days tutoring at a school each Weds up until Xmas. I hope things pick up soon. Will prob give my agencies a call today to remind them that I am still on the face of the planet!!!! I'm sure come October, they'll be knocking down our doors guys!!! What do you peeps do with the days you don't get work? I'm lucky as hubby has a well paid job (for now touch wood!) so it's not completely disasterous!!!!
