Default Contacting Schools Directly - HELP!

i'm a secondary teacher currently doing some supply work. i'm getting fed up with one of my agencies messing me about and someone brought up the

how to even start to do this. do i write a letter? what should i include in this letter? and should i just send this to any schools i can?

any help as to how to get started would be great. thank you!

I started by having a ring-around. I asked each school that I would like to work in whether they used supplies direct or through agencies - if the response was positive, I then asked if I could arrange to drop off a CV and possibly meet the head (whose name I had previously googled!)

Many of the schools would only use agencies and a few had a bank of supplies (these schools generally said they would hold my CV on file in case things changed - and I have since had work in one of them) but others were very happy to meet with me.

A week after visiting the school, I then dropped off an "availability card" with all my details, a small

Yup, I did exactly what JaneB did, and worked in 13 out of the 14 schools I contacted, in that term!

About 2 years ago I composed a letter, taking great care to get it right, took it to local schools personally or posted it, smiled and acted nice, never heard anything back, waste of time.

of HTs in my area if they would take on someone (for supply) if they handed in a letter and CV, and they all said no - they all have an agency that they use regularly....I think it also depends on if your LA have a Supply Bank in use - this would deter schools from taking someone on from this approach.
