Default First day and scared

Hi,

Im doing my first days supply tommorrow (only an afternoon thank god so easing myself in) Im really nervous and would appreciate any advice people could give me. A lot of the stuff on here seems to be aimed at primary school and Im secondary. I know the school Im supplying at, what time to turn up and that its general supply but thats it.

Mainly Im worried about behaviour management and how to

t things off with the class. Im also unsure on what to take esp resource wise, I presume that as it was prebooked that work will have been left but I have been advised by my agencies to always have work in case of an emergency. Do I need work for every year group/subject or should it just be generic stuff? Any Ideas?

Also is there anything I need to know when I get there. I dont know what will happen will they tell me where to go etc when I get there? What about registers?

Sorry for my ramblings, Im just panicing a bit (but also excited to get back in the classroom)

Hi,

You're right, it's mostly primary on here, but we are getting more and more secondary supply teachers all the time, so keep an eye out!

You need to know times: assemblies, classes, breaks, lunchtimes and home time (might sound obvious, but I've nearly sent a class out half an hour early... got

with the school down the road!)

When you get there, you need to ask about these, don't wait to be told! Ask about times, ask for someone to take you to where you'll be teaching, ask about registers, ask where to go if they expect you to move classrooms halfway through.

If it's pre-booked, there should be planning left. It's not always the case, but I think especially in secondary school, you can't be expected to have emergency lesson plans for every age group, for every subject, that'd be ridiculous. You need to have a

s up your sleeve. There are filler and fail-safes on here which, even though they've been posted with KS2 in mind, they can easily be adapted for secondary... the Y7s were only in KS2 a few weeks ago afterall! I'd stick with a generic Literacy, Numeracy (investigation type thing) and PHSCE type lesson.

Good luck, don't panic, it's only an afternoon (great

Red face survived

Thanks for the advice guys really appreciate it.

First day went pretty well( apart from accidentally writing on the smart board with white board pen-all was well in the end, good old wetwipes); cute year sevens and a dvd for year nines. Im feeling more confident now, just itching for more work,

Thanks again

Yr 7's are sooo cute, generally you say jump and they say how high, in my experience its the hormonal yr 9's and 10's you've got to be careful with. It's down to those age groups that i've decided to give primary a go. I'm sure they can be just as badly behaved at times, but at least they are all a lot shorter than you and therefore aren't intimidating.

I agree at 9 and 10 children sometime really behave badly, but you have to be careful, from first day be friendly with them but maintain your self respect while they know there is respectful relation between them and their teacher they will be hesitant to behave badly, teach them through moral stories
