Default Supply in independent schools

Hello

Does anyone know how independent preparatory schools recruit supply teachers? or can anyone offer any tips/advice on marketing yourself to independent schools?

Hi Kathrynwwjd,

I've only ever had one experience with a prep school... the mother-in-law of a friend of a friend was head, and the friend of a friend was a teacher there. The HT called one day while I was teaching in another county and left a message with the secretary, introduced herself, offered me an interview, no application or anything, said it was KS2/ICTCo. Asked me to call back to make final arrangements for the interview. I was on a residential the week of the interview, 300 miles away. I didn't live in the area at the time, they'd just heard I was moving into it ready for the September. I didn't want the job, and phoned to tell them at about 4:30pm the next day. I asked please could I speak to Mrs HT, and a very rude teacher told me it wasn't her job to chase round the school after the HT, she was trying to run a cookery club! Good job I wasn't a paying parent! She then found the HT, who told me, after I'd said who I was and that I was very sorry but couldn't make the interview and didn't want to try and rearrange it either, it wasn't very polite to disturb the cookery club (?!?!?!?*$"£^&$?!?!?!?) and that if I couldn't make the interview, then perhaps it wasn't meant to be... even though they'd pulled a lot of strings to get me an interview in the first place.

Huh?!

Being a bit more meek and mild than I am now, I felt really guilty for disturbing the cookery club for days after, and for making the HT waste her time getting an interview sorted for me! It only took a few more days though for me to be spitting feathers and wanting to call them back and tell them exactly why I wouldn't be recommending their school to anyone in the future!

Anyway... no help to you I suppose, but a story I just remembered! Er, certainly the one above takes supply teachers on personal recommendation only from current teachers. It may be worth popping into one with your CV and a covering letter though?

Would you like me to check your covering letter, CV, supporting statement or application form?
