Default Registering with council??

Hi, I've just finished PGCE and surprise surprise.....yes you guessed it.....I don't have a job!! So I've signed up with an agency, but I thought also that I would like to put CV round local schools and see what (if anything) I could get from them. Am I right in thinking that I have to register with my local council?? I live in Worcestershire, anyone had anything to do with this in my area??

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

Hello, welcome to the forum!

I don't know about Worcestershire, but here (Cumbria) they sort of say you have to, but I didn't bother.

Basically, I called them and they said no supply teachers were needed, they had too many, call back in 18 months. Now, Carlisle (HQ) is a long way from where I live, and whilst they may have been overrun with supply teachers up there, down here I knew schools were desperate... to the tune of 13 different ones using me to do supply work for them that term, simply from calling, then hand delivering my CV and covering letter (yes, no valid CRB, I know, naughty of them!) After my first day of supply, the school sent my details on a timesheet up to HQ and they had to pay me. They paid me as an unqualified teacher at first as they didn't have any of my paperwork from my previous county (or CRB!) and didn't give me the tax allowance, and it took a long time to get my proper pay sorted, but unqualified teachers get vitually the same as NQTs, so it won't be too much of a dent in your wage if that happens to you.

Would you like me to check your covering letter, CV, supporting statement or application form?

- try to make contact with the schools as well rather than just posting a CV so that they can put a face to the name.

Also, I found follow up calls and/or visits were useful - one school who didn't get back to me in the first few months use me at least once a week now after I sent a 'reminder' letter to update them on my availability!

There's an old post about sending letters to schools (I think it was started by Nutty) - have a search as she set out a covering letter.
