Default What to wear to an interview.

I was told at uni:

Female -

wear a skirt, even if the head's not, there may be a Governor who is an old fuddy-duddy and likes to see ladies in skirts. I told my tutor I was expecting to be perm. unemployed as there was no way I was wearing a skirt for anything.

Male -

shirt and tie. For instructions on tie, see bright pin/hair piece bit above.

I think my lecturer needed to come back to the modern day!

Really you were told to where a skirt, I'm not a skirt person. Do they expect you to wear a trouser/ skirt suit at interview? i always have dressed smart in a trouser suit but I've seen other interviewees dress a bit casual.

I really was, yes! I was horrified. Haven't owned a skirt since I was about 6! I still haven't worn one, and had two interviews for full-time perm work, and got both the jobs!

I didn't wear a trouser suit, more smart trousers and a 'neat' top! I think both were knitted, or jersey type tops actually, yes, rather than blouses. I'm very casual, think I have lost supply in one local school here because I was too casual, all the teachers were in suits and I turned up with near combat trousers on! They were brand new and very smart, no fancy tassles or anything, but they did have a

of pockets down the legs!

If I were to get an interview round here now, I think I'd wear a trouser suit. I'm getting on a bit, and I think it's more important these days. Back then, I wasn't too bothered about the interviews as there were relatively few applying and I had very strong references already.

true there's more competition for jobs now, and I think schools expect you to dress smart. My first teaching interview was horrible, it was boiling hot, stupidely wore a black trouser suit. Didn't know if I should take my jacket off or not because it was hot, the interviewee before me kept hers on. but I was getting hotter and hotter waiting so just ended up taking it off and holding it my hand.

I'd always wear a suit, summer or winter. I'd choose trousers or skirt depending on my mood. (But I was also told on PGCE that skirts were better and that was only 10 years ago!)

I generally wear a

type top under the suit, not one with a smiley face in the middle though, obviously!!. If I teach as part of the interview I'll nearly always take the jacket off for the lesson for practical reasons. In the interview itself I'd take the jacket off if the room was too hot. No-one will penalise you for taking the jacket off, they might if you were daft enough to allow yourself to overheat and faint!

But like somone else said I've seen people look very very casual at interview. I remember one person in jeans! (OK fairly dark and so smartish looking, but even so!)

If we wore one with a smiley face in the middle, do you think we'd get extra brownie points for character/sense of humour? After all, it's kids we're wanting to work with here! Our lecturer told the guys to wear a somewhat quirky tie, not too extravagant, but enough to say you've got personality. Told the girls to wear a brooch (that spelling doesn't look right and I've tried it a thousand ways!) to add interest and

you sound like me! And though I'd not go as far as wearing jeans and fleeces to work normally, I do love those non-uniform charity days! I sure as heck don't own a brooch!

On occasions I can make an effort with fancy earings or bracelets, but that's as far as I go!

Oooo! Much further than I can go, haven't even got pierced ears!

On occasions though, I have to admit to scraping yesterday's mud off my Vibram's before venturing out somewhere posh!
