How To Quiet A Noisy Class Of Children

I am working on a book on behaviour management for supply teachers. There are alot of techniques that I use to quiet a noisy class. But what I would do first is tell the children that I have some magic liquid, and that I'll put a drop on a desk of the quiet groups. I am actually using disappearing ink (available from toy or magic stores) which is designed to disappear in about 20 - 30 minutes. I tell the children that the liquid does not like noise and that if they are very quiet it will perform magic: maybe disappear and change into clear water, change s, bubble, etc... I remind them not to touch the liquid and not to taste it ("It will give you a tummy ache if you taste it"). (I would not use it with very young children or developmentally delayed children). I also tell the children that it does not like to be stared at;they can look at it occasionally. If someone accidently touches it, simply replace the drop with another drop. The children soon become very quiet.
