Default Remembering Names

of blank white stickers (like freezer labels or something) in your bag. If it's a new, young class, and you have time in the morning, write each name in the register on a sticker and give out during registration.
Give a fancy sticker for those who keep it on until the end of the day!

How do you remember names?

I used to be able to get half the class during registration, and the other half during the next lesson... but those days are long gone. I try to remember one name from each table now, and call it 'Henrietta's table' for the day. It helps you to remember who is sitting close to Henrietta, and also helps when giving feedback to the teacher if you can say they sit opposite Henrietta etc. It doesn't help when they swap for literacy hour/numeracy hour/home tables/afternoon tables etc! I struggle... I really do.

But, I try to get a few quickly and more as I talk to them and go through the day. But then as soon as they're outside (ie in coats!) I'm screwed.

Either that, or I go down the route of giving a silly name to a couple of the pupils - you can usually gauge their reaction to that the first time you meet them. I had a kid called Ryan who insisted his name was Jenny. So Jenny he was for the rest of the day. His own fault.

A seating plan is a great idea if the class is yours for the day & stays in the same seats all day. It can even work for individual lessons, just draw a rough plan of the desks & ask a sensible pupil to tell you who sits where, & write the names in. This is better for KS2, it's not always easy getting names from diruptive Y9s & Y10s who you've only got for one lesson, & who relish their anonymity!

I was wondering about buying some stickers and the first activity could be to decorate their stickers with the names on??! We would take the stickers off for break time in case other children asked why they were wearing them. Part of me wonders if the school wouldn't like this

Default Remebering kids names

I am terrible at names. I tell the kids I have a bad memory and won't remember. I do the 'remember one name for each table' trick, and then I call the kids 'sir' and 'miss', which they like. Sometimes kids have names I don't want to say, for example, these is a turkish name which sounds like 'penis' or, if they insist on a particular pronounciation I can't do, so I refer to them as, for example, 'Mr P', 'Miss B'.
The register is a problem sometimes, with unexpected pronounciations so I nominate a PA and treat them with great respect, defer to them in class, 'what do YOU think, Sammy?' and ask them to read the register.
This works for me.

When I take the register with KS2, I just let them do it themselves which saves me from any embarrassing pronunciations - I say Hello X to the first child, who then says Hello X to next child... so I get to hear how to say each name!

So what about the kids who won't speak/ or don't have sufficent english to understand? Or won't co-operate? I would be scared to try this approach
