Default New and a little scared of Yr 5/6!

I'm an NQT waiting for their 1st telephone call. During my training I only taught years 2&3 so the thought of the older kids is a little scary!

I have quite a few resources for KS1 and lower KS2 but I am a little stuck as to what sort of back up activities to put together for years 5&6. Any help of reassurance would be gratefully received.

Oh, they're all the same really!

No, but the older ones love quizzes, there's a thread on here somewhere, do a search... they'll do quizzes on anything and everything, but usually hate numeracy ones, so you have to work harder at that.

Have you got a blank 'book review' template? A few times (can't believe I've not written this one down before!) I've got a folder, got two kids to make a cover 'Our Class Book Reviews', and given them all a

y of the template. It takes time to go over things like ISBN numbers etc., but it'll keep them going for hours, especially if there are plenty of books in the classroom... the template I've got (which I'll dig out and put up one day soon somehow, it's only on paper) is quite a fun one, any KS2 year can do, and has penty of easy bits, as well as opportunities to write... tick boxes/places to draw fav. character etc.

ah hah!!! god thinking on book reviews, I hate doing them with KS1, they know which books they like but can't say why or what about them. But do remember doing them with yr 3 (i'm like you fraggle - only went up to yr3 on PGCE only taught FS / KS1 since then!) but book reviews is something I might be able to do with KS2!

s on Ideal Day!

I began supply preferring Year 5/6 but now like infants! Yes, the older kids love quizzes, competions (e.g. a Boggle style game where they have to list the longest/most number of words - be careful not to allow rude words!) etc.

Make your rules known at the onset of the day and stick to them. Don't try and be too friendly or they'll take advantage. You can always be friendly later on when you have them under your thumb!!!!

I once was shoved into a year 5 class (I thought I'd be teaching year 2) with no planning whatsoever. We ended up doing money activities and role playing shop (I know that sounds babyish but they loved it!) finding change and totalling amounts, which coins etc. We also did Roal Dahl "Matilda" where I read out a description of the Trunchbull and they did some art work based on the adjectivies or something along those lines. I saw that they were doing a project on Egypt and so we did some Egyptian

Also bingo - works for any age, any maths subject - tables, number bonds, decimals/percentages, etc.

Thanks for the advice everyone think I am a little less scared of them now!
I think its the subject knowledge especially in maths that bothers me. The thought of turning up to a year 6 class and not understanding the work thats been left myself worries me. I have my maths explained for primary teachers book packed and ready to go with me!
