Default Reception and KS1 resources

I am awaiting a call to go in and teach the younger children. Can anyone suggest good websites where a days work is planned around a story, song or picture. Thanks

Not sure about any websites but let me know your favourite books and I'll try and think of some

s!

e.g. any story about farm animals...

Starter - guess the sign – show Makaton signs for various animals and see if the children can guess the animal. Practise the signs together.

Literacy - make folding, zigzag books (in the shape of a barn?). Reception aged children could draw a picture on each page of a farm animal and write the name. More able children could write a sentence about each animal or write a little story about life on the farm. Could inspire creative writing by having a Living Sentence session first.

Numeracy - sheep +

= 8 – investigate other animal sums.

Make a bar chart of favourite farm animals on the board – children could make their own bar charts according to number of toy animals given to them.

Art - make animal masks or a large farm mural - each child can contribute to a big farm picture by drawing animals.

Guessing game - one child is chosen to come to the front of the class and has a post-it-note or sticker on their back (or written on head band). They have to guess the name of the animal written by asking questions to the rest of the class. Class can only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Construction challenge - use any suitable construction to make an animal shelter/farm/animal.

Word challenge - during the day, challenge the children to write a list of as many animals as possible on a large sheet of paper.

Action songs - “If you want to be a farmer…” - milk a cow, shear a sheep, ride a horse, feed the chicks, move the hay… to tune of "If you're happy and you know it..." Allow children to make up verses.

Anagrams - as a class, try to rearrange the letters to find the farm animals – e.g. toag = goat

Acrostics - Year 1 and 2 -write the letters for the words ‘farm animals’ vertically on a piece of paper and ask children to write an animal or farm related word for each letter

I wouldn't worry about always trying to fit everything into the theme as it can be very forced!
However, most themes could lend themselves to counting or addition/subtraction - i.e. count nursery characters, add sets of animals etc. Also pictograms, tally charts or bargraphs can always be tied into a theme.

The Jolly Postman is a super book - I love it

Role play/Drama - getting groups to act out parts of the story or what certain characters might do/say...

Art - designing stamps, making character masks, drawing pictures of/designing dream bicycles ...

Maths - bike wheels are circles so have a shape hunt around class to find and record other circles...

etc etc

I'm a bit busy tonight and, in fact, this week but I'll have a think about your books (if nobody else gets there first!) and try to get back to you. Most of the farm animal

On my laptop I have ebooks from Amazon. I have the Kindle Software installed on it (which is free) and I find these ebooks helpful:
Type: 'Phonic Ebooks: Sounds Made Easy' into Amazon's Search which are ebooks that focus on phonics by C.F. Crist.
These ebooks look great and I can hook up my laptop to Interactive whiteboards quickly and easily.
