A lot of the time planning will be done for you. If not just try and do a general lesson. I wouldn't worry too much about whether it is from the lit/num strategy as such as you can be thrown completely in the deep end.
2. If not do i just make my objectives up?
I used to try and have a few basic objectives noted down so it did link to the strategies. Whatever your lesson is, you decide the objective and designate the success criteria (or whatever they are called now) to meet you expectations of the year group.
3.Can i just do a history lesson about anything or does it have to be relevant to what the year group is studying at the time??
I used to try and link things I was doing to what the year group is studying at the time if possible but sometimes it is impossible so don't stress too much about it. If you have a bit of prior notice you could plan according to their topic but if not don't worry.

4. Should i just plan a weeks work for each Year group and use the Literacy framework??
For me I found it best to have a lesson

for most subject suitable for each pair of year groups as in Nurs/Rec, Y1/Y2 etc. with an objective. I would only ever fully plan a weeks work if you knew you were covering a class for a whole week and knew there was no planning.

Really a lot of the time planning will be left as most teachers plan a week in advance. Also I found a lot of schools tended to do similar things at similar times so I used to pinch good worksheets etc and have a stock of them. Plus a few activity/lesson

s. Don't worry about it too much as you sort of find your way through. You'll find the more you do it, the less stuff you need to have with you!!!

Well done Danfur! My two pennyworth...

1. Can lessons be one off lessons or do they have to be from the Literacy or Numeracy Strategies for example??

If you are thrown in at the deep end with nothing from the teacher / school, they can't expect you to know where the children are up to, what they've covered before, what they're covering in the near future. If you have to do a Lit lesson, give them a poem structure i.e. [Emotion/feeling]tastes like, smells of, feels like, etc. If you have to do a numeracy one, with upper KS2 you could try:

, click on the calendar to find different puzzles... do this at home incase you don't have access to the IWB in school... it'll give you some great puzzle

s, like can you make all the amounts up to 20p using the coins 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p? Choose some to adapt for lower ages.

Anything you do as a one off lesson, providing it's worthwhile and not

ing in a newspaper front cover for example, I'm sure will cover something in one of the strategies anyway!!!

2. If not do i just make my objectives up?

Yup. And as far as success criteria go, always put in a team work one, or a work queitly one etc.

3.Can i just do a history lesson about anything or does it have to be relevant to what the year group is studying at the time??

If History was on the tmetable, and there's no planning left, I would probably opt for a PSHCE (or whatever it's called this term!) lesson based on how would the children live without electicity... get them thin

s or whatever they're doing... or a lesson on famous people from the past such as Mother Theresa, Ghandi, etc., and see what they can learn from their lives - but you need to know about the people, and that probably involves planning and at least a picture of the person, so stick with the first

, no resources, and all the talk comes from the kids!

4. Should i just plan a weeks work for each Year group and use the Literacy framework??

NONONONONONONONONONONONONONO!!!!!!!!! You'll never use it! Honestly, I did supply teaching for 6+ years, and had to resort to my own 'plans' less than 5% of the time!! About 2 days a year! I'm fortunate in a way that I had taught for years beforehand and had a load of lessons in my head, but honestly, stick to

ier, think lots of discussion generated by the kids answering a Q you pose, and you'll soon be leaving your lever arch full of plans and worksheets behind!

Thank you for the useful advice in reply to 'silly questions'. I am about to go back into supply after a long absence from the classroom (three years) and an even longer absence from supply teaching. Currently mixed feelings about it all, but glad to hear I'm not alone and there is at least a cyberspace ear to bend!

Good luck seahourse, and glad you found us! You're definitely not alone, and ear-bending is exactly why I set the forum up... to save my other half's, so go for it!
