I struggle... I really do.
But, I try to get a few quickly and more as I talk to them and go through the day. But then as soon as they're outside (ie in coats!) I'm screwed.
Either that, or I go down the route of giving a silly name to a couple of the pupils - you can usually gauge their reaction to that the first time you meet them. I had a kid called Ryan who insisted his name was Jenny. So Jenny he was for the rest of the day. His own fault.
