Default Disrespect to adults

What happened to the world?

I, along with other adults in the classroom, was shown an enormous amount of disrespect the other day by one child (KS2), to the disgust of other children too! We were basically verbally abused.. and when we saw the teacher about it at the end of the day, the teacher gave said child a hug! There, there, never mind...

I know there are children with problems, this being one of them, but that was a blatant show of disrespect, shouldn't we be teaching them manners, rather than pampering to them all the time? Manners aren't being taught at home often these days, do we make allowances for these children, or teach them basic social skills?

Where do we draw the line?
