I like to put a maths or language challenge on the board for them to think about after they have finished their work (individually or with a friend depending on the child/class/my headache!).
How about...
a 3x3 grid with 12 written in the centre square - children need to fill the other squares with the numbers 1-8 so that each line adds up to 12
codes - a=1, b=2 etc - write a question in code for your friend to read and answer
dart boards - each child could draw a mini dart board (or you could make and laminate some beforehand), close their eyes and make 3 dots on the board with a pen/whiteboard marker. Add their scores and see how many darts it takes to reach 100
