As promised, here is what the JobCentre said to me on Friday when I visited - and unneccessarily complicated it is too!

There is a rule that you can work for up to 16 hours without having to sign off again. The money that you earn is deducted from your benefit, which is fair enough.

However, if you work for under 16 hours but earn more than you would have got in benefits for that week (£57 ish), then you are automatically signed off and have to sign back on again! You don't have to go through the whole long signing on performance, they have something called "rapid recall" (I thought that was something to do with knowing your 4 x table!!), which I will probably find out about soon. The lady I spoke to said she wasn't sure whether you lose benefit for the week when you earn the money or the week when the school finally gets around to paying up, but I have another appointment on Wednesday to see someone else, so I should find that out then.
